Print Production Weekend Notes

- German offset press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer (KBA) announced that its orders are down 36.7% due to slow economy. 838 employees will lose their jobs in a cost cutting move.

- German press maker, Heidelberg, announced it will lay off up to 5,000 workers to reduce costs.

- Variable data software maker, XMPie, announced a new option, called “Personaleffect E-Media”, which generates personal URLs. When a direct mail piece is generated, the prospects name is created into a website, that the end user can enter to respond to the offer.

- Former Xerox workers have reached a preliminary settlement against their former employer over benefits they claim they should have received. The U.S. District Court approved a $51 million settlement.

- Xerox announced new options for its 700 Digital Color Press:
- SquareFold Trimmer Module that creases a cover and trims face of booklets. The cover is creased so that the booklet has a square spine.

Xerox Enhances Finishing Options for Production Systems

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 26, 2009 -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has added a number of finishing options to its 700 Digital Color Press and the 4112™/4127™ family of products. The enhancements create more profit opportunities for print providers by expanding the range of professionally finished in-line applications that can be created, such as manuals, calendars, brochures and booklets.
Features now available on the 700 Digital Color Press and the 4112/4127 systems include:

Integrated in-line Xerox SquareFold™ Trimmer Module that creases the cover and performs face trimming to ensure professionally finished booklets and manuals. This optional module creates square spine booklets that lay flat for easy handling, stacking and storing.

FreeFlow™ Print Server version 7, which delivers enhanced color and monochrome image quality, an intuitive interface for simple job submission and customizable security features.

GBC® AdvancedPunch™ that offers a versatile range of in-line punching styles to create documents that are ready for professional mechanical binding. This automates the process of printing, collating and punching to save time, maximize productivity and lower costs.
Also available for the 700 Digital Color Press is the ability to put multiple finishing options in-line - allowing for greater functionality and flexibility to run a wide variety of print jobs with a single integrated system.

Xerox will showcase the capabilities of the 700 Digital Color Press by printing square fold and trimmed booklets, punched calendars and photo applications at On Demand, a major event for the document imaging industry, March 31 through April 2 in Philadelphia. Availability
The enhancements for the 4112/4127 devices will be available for worldwide order taking in the second quarter. Océ Première Collection of New Media



Océ Première Collection of New Media Launched to Deliver Sustainable Performance

March 25, 2009 – Trumbull, CT – Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery solutions, has launched the Océ Première Collection of high quality media designed for robust performance and longevity. The first items in the collection are two Presentation Papers and a Tyvek® material, which have been specifically designed to work with Océ CrystalPointTM imaging technology in the Océ ColorWaveTM 600 printer.

Presentation Paper (Océ 6028 an Océ 6032)
This ultra-white (98 brightness), heavyweight media includes an exceptionally smooth surface that delivers a superior look and feel. It produces rich color prints for high-end proposals, presentations and short-term signage. Presentation Paper is recyclable, and acid and elemental chlorine free (ECF). It is available in 28-lb (105 gsm) and 32-lb (120 gsm) weights and a variety of widths from 24 to 42 inches. These media can also be used in the Océ TDS800, Océ TDS800 Pro, Océ TCS300 and Océ TCS500 printers to produce technical line drawings.

Tyvek (Océ 6007)
The Tyvek material is bright white (97 brightness), lightweight, durable and moisture resistant. It carries an ASTM Class “A” rating for flame resistance and is recyclable. Tyvek is ideal for creating banners, maps, murals, signage instruction sheets, menus, trail guides and more. This 7.5-mil media is available in a variety of widths from 24 to 42 inches.

Konica to preview bizhub Pro 1200

Konica Minolta is set to preview its new digital mono bizhub Pro 1200 machine when it exhibits at Northprint next month.

The digital manufacturer will also launch the light production bizhub Pro 950 printer at the show under the theme ‘Black is Back’.

The Pro 1200 can output up to 120 prints a minute and features in-line finishing while the Pro 950 offers speeds of 95 pages a minute with monthly volumes up to 750,000.

Konica Minolta will also exhibit its bizhub Pro 2500P and recently-launched bizhub Pro C65hc at the 21-23 April event.

Clare Revell, head of production print at Konica Minolta, said: "We see the show as a fantastic opportunity to share our latest technologies with our customers to help develop their businesses. As ever Konica Minolta is proud to be able to support the print industry."

Weekend Production Print Notes

Hewlett Packard announced it will temporarily shut down its Indigo production color system plant in Kiryat Gat, Israel for up to three months. There is a concern that the shut down may be permanent according to Israel newspaper, GLOBES.

Canon announced that it has sold an imagePRESS C6000 production color system to a Century 21 Real Estate office in Chicago, where it will be used to produce marketing materials and color postcards.

Canon announced it has authorized Agfa Graphics to resell its imagePRESS production color systems to increase sales to graphic arts markets.

Xerox announced it sold an iGen4 production color system to Gabriel Group, a printshop in St. Louis, MO.

Oce’ announced it is shipping two new high speed color inkjet production systems, the JetStream 500 (505ppm) and the JetStream 1000 (1070ppm). Pricing not announced.

Oce’ now shipping the ColorStream 9000 color laser production system, running at 168ppm. Pricing not announced.
